Hm... premature submission of the comment, my apologies for that.Sinterklaas is an informal name for Saint Nicholas, two saints in roman-catholicism (one of them was said bishop of Myra). Hence the link Santa Claus -> Saint Nicholas. The visual image of Santa Claus was made by a illustrator commissioned by Coca-Cola, but Santa Claus is part of a very old tradition. English settlers in the US copied the festivity from the Dutch settlers (and somehow linked it to x-mas, which is 20 days later).

Santa Claus is the americanised version of Sinterklaas, a traditional Dutch childrens festivity. Sin

I absolutely love Richard Dawkins. Not only does he write magnificent books, but really, just the way he talks about the things he believes in makes you so intrigued. He's an amazing man doing an amazing job.

You would do well to check your history CHARESTHEHAMER. have a look at Luther kings close company of friends during that period. A lot of them were secular or atheist.

Coca cola just made him red. he was incredibly 'popular' before that.

Its unfortunate that Dawkins groups all "believes" together and considers them all equally irrelevant. For although there are numerous statements in this lecture that contradict the beliefs of the Western religions, I didnt hear anything that contradicted the Asian philosophies.Hopefully he will one day understand that it is possible to reject the archaic Western religions and yet obtain even more wonder by paralleling the amazing findings of science with the philosophies of the Far East.

Well, I don't see any relevant connection betwenn St. Nicholas and Santa Claus. The latter is a product of Coca-cola company (or was popularized by it) and is not a saint.

00clouds00 (Speaking on how comparing Christ to Santa isn't a valid analogy)"We aren't talking about God but about Christ, who was a historical person (even Dawkins admits that). Santa Claus is not a historical person, he was made up"So there was no St Nicholas, Bishop of Myra?

Hmmmm nice thought that.Especially since the NT was writen to tell of jesus, whereas Homer simply wrote of the world, which happened to contain the gods.
